New info on the legal situation
Here, the brothers keep a low profile and emphasize again that “the power lies in the truth”.
They were the first to use the name in relation to a video game and are also confident that they can continue to use the name legally and without problems.
Currently, their focus is on development, and everything related to trademark law is handled by MytonaFntastic, a New Zealand-based joint venture between Fntastic and publisher Mytona.
Inspiration from other games
When asked if they were inspired by games like The Last of Us and The Divison, the developers said they were not. Of course, they are inspired by the “champions of the industry”.
However, “life itself” is also one of their greatest muses.
Can Fntastic handle a project like The Day Before?
When asked if they are confident that they can realize the vision for the game, the brothers are self-confident:
We are confident in our ability to realize our vision for the game, thanks to the unique blend of our team’s hunger, our work culture, our publisher Mytona, and the support of our external volunteers.
Unpaid, voluntary employees
The question about the often-criticized unpaid “volunteers” gets down to the nitty-gritty. According to the developers, there are both paid and unpaid employees who contribute to the projects.
While we have paid employee-volunteers, we also have unpaid external volunteers. External volunteers offer their time and skills voluntarily without remuneration, engaging in activities they genuinely enjoy. We propose various tasks and invite interested volunteers to undertake them.
Their latest game, Propnight, has significantly more external volunteers than The Day Before.
Here, the volunteers are currently mainly responsible for Easter Eggs, but as development continues, more new potential tasks will open up.
What kind of game will The Day Before be?
In the past, it was often unclear what exactly the gameplay focus of The Day Before will be. When asked about this, Fntastic describes The Day Before as a “post-apocalyptic sandbox with an open world”.
The game will take place in a huge city called Fortune City. In this city, you can buy houses and vehicles and create “unique, personal stories” along the way.
The main focus of the game will be player-versus-player (PvP) elements, but there will also be quests and other PvE elements that revolve around the restoration of society in terms of content.
Fntastic did not want to reveal technical information such as the number of players per server in the interview.
They are currently in the testing phase and are trying to find “the balance between a dynamic, populated game world and optimal gameplay performance.
What types of enemies will there be in The Day Before?
There will be different types of infected (zombies) that you can encounter in The Day Before.
These are supposed to be “within a realistic range” and contribute to the “complexity of the game experience”.
According to Fntastic, the focus of the game is not only on the zombies, but also on the interactions and experiences that players will have with each other.
How do the player hubs work?
The central meeting place for players will be the “Woodberry Survivor Colony”. Here, players will be able to meet, relax, trade, and even assign tasks to each other.
You will probably be able to take a job within the colony, as a packer or even a singer, which should further promote the realism factor and the interaction between the players.
Unfortunately, Fntastic didn’t say exactly how the assignment of tasks among players will work.
There will also be opportunities to relax in the hubs (for example, in the already shown sauna) and to go to the gym.
However, the studio did not explain how exactly these activities will contribute to the game, or what exact bonuses you will receive.
How will basebuilding work?
Players will be able to purchase their own homes in The Day Before. These will serve as a private meeting place for friends in the game and as a balance for the stressful life in the apocalypse.
You’ll be able to furnish and customize everything to your own taste….
Unlike what some have suspected and wanted so far, however, these bases will be immune to player attacks and and a security zone.
Whether the bases will be in the open world at all or in an instanced area is currently unknown.
Release date, roadmap & release on consoles
In the interview, Fntastic once again confirmed the release on November 10, 2023 for the PC.
Immediately after the release, a roadmap will also be released to show the developers’ continuing plans for the game.
Surprisingly, a release for the next-gen consoles was also announced. Thus, The Day Before is also supposed to be released for the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S.
However, there is no release date for it at the moment.
In addition to the interview with a whole bunch of information, the developers have also released a new teaser trailer titled “Survive the Apocalypse with Speed”.
You can find the trailer and our short analysis of it in our article on the subject.
