Ubisoft’s battle royale shooter Hyper Scape apparently failed to meet expectations and will soon be shut down.
In April, the virtual world of Hyper Space will be shut down.
Ubisoft pulls the plug in April
In a statement, Ubisoft commented on the decision to shut down on April 28:
We made the difficult decision to end development on Hyper Scape and shut down the game as of April 28.
We wanted to create a vertical, fast-paced, melee shooter experience and we are very grateful to our community for joining us on our journey. We will incorporate the key learnings from this game into future products.
Player loss despite new ideas
Initially, Hyper Scape generated a lot of attention on Twitch, if only because you had to watch it to get a beta key for the game.
The fast, futuristic shooter with 100-player rounds also wanted to score points with powerups, a new mechanic with the safe zone (individual districts were switched off) and a Twitch integration.
However, the game wasn’t really convincing and in response to dwindling player numbers, Ubisoft reacted by reducing rounds to 60 players and introducing a deathmatch mode, which was even relatively popular.
It’s hard to estimate how many players the title had at its peak and still has today, since Hyper Scape is only available on Ubisoft and the Epic Games Store, where you can’t read such information.
In the end, though, Hyper Scape probably couldn’t hold its own against competition like Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone and the old master PUBG.
Thus, Ubisoft’s attempt to gain a foothold in the highly competitive genre failed after less than two years.
