With update 1.13 and the event Tide of Shadows, Crytek’s PvPvE shooter Hunt: Showdown has received a new boss – the Rotjaw.
We’ll tell you in our Rotjaw Boss Guide how to find the boss and how to best take down the alligator lady.

How to find Rotjaw?
At the beginning of the event, Rotjaw could only be found in the “Wildcard” contract, but now the new boss is available in the Standard contract.
You can now find Rottmaul in the following times of day/weather conditions:
- Fog
- Sunset
- Serpent Moon Night
- Thundershower (Rain)
If you start a round with the four conditions above and only see one boss target, then 100% of the time Rottjaw is also on the map.
Then you will have to look for special clues. These are only visible at medium distance in the shadow view and are not shown like normal hints, but by a kind of lightning.
The clue itself almost looks like a small volcano with black particles rising from it. If you interact with it, the particles will indicate a direction.
(From this point on, Rottjaw is also displayed as a boss icon in the upper left).
These special clues will show you the way to the next clue for the boss or the way to his area on the map.
Unlike the regular bosses in the game, hints do not cause an area on the map to be narrowed down.
Once you reach the boss area, all you have to do is find the armored lizard.
To do this, simply check your shadow vision regularly until the boss icon flashes.
A deep rumbling or “water splashing” is also an indication that you are getting closer.
If Rotjaw hasn’t been startled yet, you can usually find her lying in wait on the shore of a river or lake, usually near clumps of reeds.
Otherwise you can just stand in the water and she will find you – I promise!
If you look very closely you can sometimes see the head on the water surface.
How to fight Rotjaw?
This is how you start the fight
If you should be first in the boss area, you can get a good first hit with a dynamite bundle or something similar when Rottjaw is still sitting on the shore.
Avoid just stepping into the water, as this will startle the boss and she will then disappear into the water.
After that, you will have to move to the water willy-nilly and Rottjaw will come to you.
When she attacks, you will see a small tidal wave coming at you from which the armored lizard will jump at you out of the water.
Skills & Attacks
There seem to be two types of attacks, a simple attack from the water and a kind of rush with a longer run-up.
The latter causes a lot of damage and you should be careful not to get hit.
The following rule of thumb applies:
- If you see bubbles rising as soon as the attack is announced, the alligator will attack with a rush.
- If you see only the water movement, it is a normal attack.
Therefore, do not go too deep into the water so that you can dodge an attack and turn around and attack yourself.
By the way, the element of the boss is electricity – water and electricity, what could go wrong, right?
And it’s this same electricity that it will use against you.
If a black, crackling circle appears when you attack, you should dodge it – otherwise the electricity will sizzle your life away.
You’ll also lose all your stamina on contact.
Lastly, there’s a sort of Rage mode where Rotjaw will rise out of the water, scream, and create a lot of these black electricity areas around her, that disappear after a short time.
Weapons, Weakness & Banishment
Many players have already tested a wide variety of weapons and ammunition against the alligator boss, and we have also fought a few battles.
Explosive items like dynamite bundles and bombs seem to be the most effective, followed by poison ammo and classic shotgun shells.
But melee weapons that rely on “slash” attacks (Bomblance) or blunt damage (Hammers) are also effective if you have enough stamina and life or healing items with you.
By the way: The weakness of Rotjaw is her mouth!
Once you have eliminated the boss, the dead alligator turns onto its back.
The banishment is much faster than with the regular bosses and you only get one bounty item afterwards.
Even more interesting new things in Hunt: Showdown
Rotjaw isn’t the only interesting new feature in Hunt: Showdown, by the way:
Update 1.13 brought, among other things, a shooting range and new balancing changes, and the new event Tide of Shadows has also started.
