DayZ – Update 1.17 brings new crafting options and weapons

The new update 1.17 for the survival title DayZ is now available on the live servers.
The update brings some new crafting alternatives to the game and also means the return of some well-known weapons and improvements to the controls.

New equipment & weapons

Some new items can be crafted, including improvised gas mask filters, a belt made from rope, a campfire cooking facility, and a complete set of new clothes assembled from scraps of cloth.

The crafting of the stone knife has been reworked and the new bone knife can now be crafted from knobs. Both knives can now also be used to craft an improvised spear.

New non-craftable melee weapons are also available, from the meat tenderizer (which acts as a sort of weak hammer) to the hatchet and pitchfork.

The firearms arsenal has also received new additions – or old acquaintances: The CR-550 Savanna, a powerful .308 caliber hunting rifle is now available in the game, as is the .308 Longhorn pistol and the “legendary” P1 9mm pistol.

Feature changes

As for the functionalities and properties of some items, there are also some changes. For example, gas mask filters can now be upgraded again with charcoal tablets, but also slowly break down over time. The same goes for cooking utensils, which now wear out gradually.

Any heat sources (torches, vehicles, generators) now also count as a factor that increases the player’s heat comfort, previously this was only the case with campfires.

VOIP & Actions

The use of voice chat (VOIP) should now also run a bit more reliably. This is because the icon is now only displayed when something is actually being transmitted, instead of permanently.
There is also now a delay setting for push-to-talk mode and a setting for VOIP distance with a controller.

The action system has also received an improvement. So now you can select between action options using the mouse wheel or the controller pad.

Improvement of the control system

Another aspect of Update 1.17 is new sensitivity options, which can be used to affect the control of actions such as aiming, movement and steering.

Also, the existing controller scheme has been revised and improved, and there is now an option to select an alternative scheme.
In the alternative scheme, innovations in the control are tested without affecting the existing control in any way.

  • A burned-out fireplace is no longer producing light
  • Canceling activation of the bear trap and landmine caused errors
  • Fixed rendering exploits related to buildings
  • The visual effect of the contaminated area partly persisted after it was despawned
  • Focus zoom briefly reset during several actions in the 1st person
  • Hair clipped with NVG head strap on female characters

Changed

  • Reworked Nizhnoye village on Chernarus
  • Adding a favorite server when already at max (25) will throw an error instead of removing a random favorite
  • Microphone now continues to listen while the player is tabbed out, but only if option “Graphics and sound” is set in the “Update in background” option
  • VOIP push-to-talk mode now has a release delay of 0.5 seconds to prevent voice cutouts
  • All heat sources are now emitting heat
  • Sensitivity settings is now exponential instead of linear
  • Bark can now be harvested with axes
  • Drain and pour liquid actions are now properly separated
  • Adjusted the wolf model to allow a more precise headshot
  • The burning duration of torches now correctly depends on the amount of fuel
  • Food can be baked in a cookware even without lard or water
  • Food looses its quantity when cooked in a cookware even without lard or water
  • Weapon sway increases dramatically while the character is rolling
  • Fireplaces start heating up the player character faster now
  • Position of the light source for Sarka 120 when only a single headlight is on was set to the proper position
  • Players are no longer able to get into a vehicle while holding a heavy item
  • Stone knifes can no longer be sharpened with a sharpening stone
  • Action inputs will be prioritized over inventory actions (e.g. climbing a ladder before dropping your item in hands)
