Dark and Darker – Fan recreates game in Fortnite creative mode

Actually, the final playtest of the successful PvPvE dungeon crawler Dark and Darker was planned for the coming weekend before Early Access.
However, the development studio Ironmace Games is currently in legal disputes with the company Nexon.

It is not yet known how and if Dark and Darker will continue.

Now, a player has recreated the game in Fortnite’s new Creative Mode 2.0 – and is causing amazement in the community.

The user Fermelon has shared a clip on the Reddit platform that shows the game, which is still in development.

Fermelon has recreated a very detailed copy of the map and the zone mechanics are also present in the game.
The currently unemployed software developer has been working on the game since January 2023 and spends at least 6 hours a day on development.
He gets help from some friends who also contribute their part to the project.

The developer is also using the same assets that the original developer Ironmace bought from the Unreal Store.
The fact that some of the mechanics from Fortnite – such as the treasure chests and the storm mechanic – are similar to those from Dark and Darker also played into his hands.

Problems with the release?

Fern plans to release the replica in April, provided that it is activated for Epic’s Creative Program.
However, it is questionable whether this will happen, because very detailed replicas of other games have already received a rejection.

In addition, Epic would probably also indirectly interfere in the legal disputes between Nexon and Ironmace with this step, which also does not seem very advantageous.

Fern has helped the developers of Ironmace in one point, though, because he and his friends invalidate one of Nexon’s main arguments.
The gaming giant claimed that it would be impossible to develop a game like Dark and Darker in less than a year, while the small fan group needed just a few months for their replica.

Fern himself doesn’t see any major problems from Nexon’s side for himself, though, because a developer can’t protect an entire genre and a certain arrangement of items and monsters, he said.
