The latest news about the survival PvP title Rust has less to do with the game itself and more with the community. Facepunch had actually invited to a meet up with the developers, which has now been canceled due to threats.
Death threats lead to cancellation
Next week, the Game Developers Conference 2023 will take place in San Francisco. Apart from this event, Rust developer Facepunch wanted to give visitors and fans of the GDC the opportunity to meet some developers, exchange portfolios and just chat a bit.
However, shortly before the conference, Facepunch now announced via Twitter to cancel the planned meeting. On Twitter, there is talk of “IRL threats”, i.e. threats against the employees.
In an exchange with the colleagues of PCGamer, Rust producer Alistar McFarlane stated that there would always be threats against the development team.
Partly, especially supporters of the cheat community had made it their business to make life difficult for individual employees, to “doxx” them and to harass them in other ways.
In the case of the planned event at the GDC 2023, there were even death threats, which ultimately caused the developer studio to cancel the event.
However, Facepunch still wants to be present at the conference itself and has offered an exchange via mail to those interested in the event instead.
This is not a statement we're happy to announce.
Due to an IRL threat we must take seriously, we're going to have to cancel the GDC meetup in San Fran next week. 😢
